Let international students become ordinary members of Chinese university campuses

Recently, several news about international students have aroused great concern in the society: one is that “one international student with three learning partners” in Shandong University has aroused social doubts. One is the 2018 Egyptian international student of International College of Fujian agricultural and Forestry University, younes, who rides an electric vehicle to carry people in the urban area, refuses to cooperate with the normal law enforcement of the police, and pushes the traffic police to resist the law violently.

The arrangement of “one international student with three learning partners” is really over the top, and it is difficult to get rid of the suspicion of “special preferential treatment” for international students. Violent resistance to the law is only a criticism of education, and the college where it is located will bring the person back to strengthen education. It is not too much to be questioned by the public that “the punishment is too light”.

In recent years, the special treatment of international students in some colleges and universities has caused widespread social dissatisfaction. Either to provide high scholarships, or to lower the entry threshold, or to provide better living conditions than the domestic students, or to open a wide range of convenient doors in study and examination, all kinds of preferential treatment, let the domestic students who study hard in the cold window look at it. What’s more, they misappropriate various resources originally used for domestic students to attract overseas students.

It is not difficult to understand the motives of these preferential treatment behaviors, which are all to meet the needs of “internationalization” of colleges and universities, increase the number of international students required by the “first-class university” standard, and add a bright stroke to the academic report of colleges and universities.

The question is, what is the effect of “internationalization” in the special treatment of overseas students in Colleges and universities? As a project that uses a lot of public financial funds, can colleges and universities provide an evaluation report to the society?

In the view of public opinion, the number of international students in Colleges and universities has increased significantly, but the contribution to scientific research, academic, capital, development and other aspects of colleges and universities is not obvious. On the contrary, some foreign students cheat subsidies, low quality, disturb social order and other negative news are constantly exposed. The preferential policy for overseas students has also become a special channel for some people in China to take advantage of the policy and change their status for admission. It not only hurt the education fairness but also has little effect. People have reason to question, what is the significance of the special preferential treatment for international students?

China’s reform and opening up have lasted for more than 40 years. China’s development is increasingly resonating with the world. All kinds of things from abroad are common in China. People have long been used to treat people and things from abroad with an equal and confident perspective, and relevant policies have begun to undergo transformation.

Take foreign-funded enterprises as an example. With the development of China’s economy, the “super national treatment” of foreign enterprises is disappearing. It is a new normal for foreign enterprises to integrate into China’s economic life in the image of “localization” and compete with Chinese enterprises equally. In such a background, the special preferential treatment for international students is particularly dazzling, not to mention that only focusing on quantity and quality is not conducive to the long-term development of colleges and universities.
